Remanufacturing & Repair

This competence field focuses on technologies for the recycling and cascade use of FRPs as well as on the development of strategies for the repair of FRP components. Furthermore, the use of renewable raw materials as matrix fillers, bio-based matrix systems or in the form of natural fibers ("biocomposites") in SMC materials and tape production, is further developed. In terms of recycling a major focus is drawn on the development of staple fiber technology for tape production and subsequent deposition into organic sheets, including their processing into components in the thermoforming process. In order to quantify the environmental impact of processes and products, sustainability assessments (LCA) are carried out.

Materials and Questions

Typical Materials

  • GFRP, CFRP, NFRP
  • UP-/EP-resin systems, biopolymers, vitrimers
  • Recycled & pyrolized reinforcement materials
  • Carbon fiber staple fiber yarns
  • Continuously and discontinuously FRP

Typical Questions

  • Can recycled materials reach same mechanical properties as virgin materials?
  • Is it possible to provide an alternative to virgin material by using materials in a cascade approach including appropriate processing methods?
  • Is it possible to use bio-based materials instead of crude-oil based ones?
  • Determining on a case-by-case basis whether recycling is economically and ecologically reasonable
