MarineCare

Sustainable Composite Materials for Maritime Applications

High process robustness and efficiency are achieved in the MarineCare project by novel powder prepregs.

The aim of the project is the development of a sustainable composite material with a core made of recycled PET (obtained from disposable bottles), face sheets made of recycled carbon fibers (rCF) and a bio-based epoxy powder. The application of a solid resin intends to substitute the vacuum infusion process that is currently used. Crucial for this is the development of prepregs at IVW. Here, the rCF textiles are pre-impregnated with the resin in powder form. The resulting prepregs are subsequently placed to a near-net shape preform and then finally impregnated and consolidated in a vacuum-based process. Important here is that the textiles are not equally impregnated over the entire surface – as is common practice – but in form of a pattern. The pattern impregnation improves the evacuability of the prepregs and enables a targeted control of the drapeability. Within the scope of the project, the influence of different patterns on the final impregnation, the evacuability and the drapeability will be investigated. In cooperation with the project partners Swiss CMT AG and GREENBOATS GmbH, a demonstrator in the form of a foil board will finally be manufactured by using the newly developed materials and technologies.
