HyRoS

Multifunctional Hybrid Rotor Blade Protection System

A new glass fiber/polymer hybrid material to protect rotor blades will be developed in the HyRoS project. The results on heating foil integration were successfully presented at the ECCM 18 in Athens.

Wind turbines are subject to adverse environmental conditions, such as rain erosion and icing, which lead to damages and power losses at the rotor blades’ leading edges. Within the project “HyRoS”, a multifunctional protection system is developed to protect the leading edges. This is done by adding an additional polymeric coating film to the glass fiber reinforced plastic. Furthermore, an electrical heating foil will be included in the structure to avoid or remove icing. This will increase the efficiency of wind turbines by reducing turbulence on the rotor profile, damages due to high peripheral speeds, maintenance intervals, and logistic costs. Additionally, the wind turbines effectivity under icing conditions will improve. The main tasks of IVW are the integration of the surface coating into the glass fiber textile and the development of a suitable heating foil perforation. Furthermore, a thermal simulation of the heating system is done which serves as basis for the design of the heating control system.
