Successful PhD: Jan Janzen Develops Process for Solid Epoxy Resin Prepregs

News25

Jan Janzen has successfully completed his doctorate at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau. His dissertation, supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. David May (until August 2024 head of the division Digitalization at IVW), introduces a process chain for the manufacturing of epoxy-based solid resin prepregs and their processing into fiber-reinforced polymer composites.

The focus of his research lies on two central challenges: limited drapability of solid prepregs at room temperature and insufficient robustness in vacuum-bag-only (VBO) processing. By using patterned partial impregnation of the textile surface, the approach allows for easier forming and more efficient evacuation during processing—significantly increasing process reliability.

“With his research, Jan has laid the foundation for an innovative material and process concept, showing a keen eye for both fundamental questions and industrial application potential,” says Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. David May. “Thanks to his enthusiasm, this work also marks the starting point for a wide range of follow-up research. It was a pleasure to supervise him.”

Beyond the dissertation, the work continues at IVW: As part of the NewPreg project, the developed methods will be scaled to industrial level and extended to include bio-based and flame-retardant resin systems through 2026. An international research stay at the University of Sheffield is planned for summer 2025 to further strengthen collaboration in this field.

“Mr. Janzen’s dissertation impressively shows how out-of-autoclave processes can be used to produce high-quality, three-dimensionally shaped components with minimal porosity,” adds Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Neumeyer. “By using room-temperature stable solid resins, this approach eliminates the need for energy-intensive cooling chains and autoclave curing—offering a relevant contribution to the eco-efficiency of thermoset composites.”

We are pleased that Jan Janzen will continue to work for IVW.

We would like to thank Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Bodo Fiedler from TU Hamburg-Harburg for his work as external reviewer in the commission as well as Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Tilmann Beck (WKK) serving as chairman of the doctoral committee.
