IVW at the 3rd EuReComp Workshop in Athens: Advancing Sustainable Composites through r-LightBioCom

News25

At the 3rd EuReComp Workshop, held on March 19, 2025, at the National Technical University of Athens, Mohamadreza Nasirzade Tabrizi of the Leibniz-Institut für Verbundwerkstoffe (IVW) presented the latest developments from the EU-funded project r-LightBioCom.

The presentation highlighted innovative approaches to increasing circularity and sustainability in high-performance composites. Specific focus was placed on:

  • Recycling and reuse: In collaboration with project partner FeyeCon, recyclates are processed and re-integrated into new formulations, improving the ecological footprint of composite materials.

  • Enhancing bio-epoxy resins: Working closely with Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), IVW is incorporating functionalized Lignin nanoparticles—a natural, bio-based resource—into epoxy matrices to improve mechanical and thermal performance while increasing the bio-content.

  • Up-scaling potential: The presented work underlined the feasibility of scaling the developed processes to meet industrial demands.

  • Tailored bio-composites: The development of use-case-specific prepregs and curing profiles showcases the project’s targeted, application-driven approach.

Through this collaborative work, r-LightBioCom is contributing to the advancement of sustainable material technologies in Europe, particularly in the area of recyclable and bio-based high-performance composites.
