IVW at FPCM-16: Advancing Composite Flow Research in Abu Dhabi

News25

From January 14–16, 2025, the IVW team, led by Dr. Miro Duhovic, Stefano Cassola, and Tim Schmidt, participated in the 16th International Conference on Flow Processes in Composite Materials (FPCM-16) at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi. This highly specialized conference brought together leading experts to discuss the latest advancements in impregnation flows, additive manufacturing, permeability modeling, and AI-driven simulations.

Key Contributions from IVW

At FPCM-16, IVW showcased its latest research through three expert presentations:

  • Finite element-assisted analysis of through-thickness impregnation behavior (Dr. Miro Duhovic)
  • Comparison of different dual-scale methods for numerical permeability prediction (Tim Schmidt)
  • Machine learning-based flow velocity field prediction in large 3D fibrous microstructures (Stefano Cassola)

These contributions sparked valuable discussions on numerical modeling, experimental validation, and the growing role of AI in composite process development.

Collaboration & Networking

Beyond the technical sessions, IVW engaged in valuable exchanges with global research partners, including TU Delft, Swinburne Institute, and other leading institutions. Discussions focused on Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), AI-enhanced permeability simulations, and future benchmarking initiatives—highlighting key trends shaping the future of composite manufacturing.

Looking Ahead to FPCM-17

The conference concluded with exciting prospects for future collaboration, and we look forward to continuing these discussions at FPCM-17 in Sheffield, UK in 2026.

A special thank you to Khalifa University for hosting this outstanding event and to all colleagues and partners for the insightful discussions!
