Polymer composites are used as structural materials in aerospace, automotive or construction applications due to their good properties and low specific weight. Nanoscale fillers introduced into the matrix have a favorable effect on the mechanical properties of the materials, but there are still issues regarding optimized processability and long-term durability. Furthermore, current matrix formulations are mostly based on fossil resources with an unfavorable carbon footprint. This project focuses on the (hybrid) nanoparticle modification of the polymer matrix from renewable resources and their introduction into fiber-reinforced composites. The aim is to better understand the reinforcing and toughening effects and mechanisms due to the presence of nanofillers in the composite.

Work content:
The work will systematically investigate the effect of individual or combinations of (nano)modifiers in bio-based thermoset composites. Particular attention will be paid to the determination of mechanical and fracture properties and durability in relation to the morphological properties of the material. The morphology will be investigated using fractography and novel methods such as temperature modulated optical refractometry. The evaluation of nanocomposite properties and toughening mechanisms will be carried out through the interpretation of process-structure-property relationships. The nanocomposite matrices will be combined with reinforcing fibers to demonstrate the extent of their ability to toughen the composite.

  • Degree in materials science, mechanical engineering or similar

  • Basic knowledge in the field of materials characterization

  • Analytical thinking and ability to work independently
  • Good communication and organizational skills
