EVO II tape placement head and demonstration tool

Thermoplastic tape placement is an innovative manufacturing process for large high end composite parts. As out-of-autoclave process with a high level of automation, it is especially suitable for the automotive and aeronautics industry. The project aims at the development of a modular and compact tape placement head with integrated quality control. The compact design shall enable the manufacturing of complex structures. Two heat sources are analyzed and optimized with regard to efficiency and controllability. In addition, a simulation process will be set up for the heating of the tapes by means of a diode laser. In order to realize the online quality control, two scanner systems are monitoring both fed and placed tape. By use of compensation methods and a modulation of the process parameters, the process will directly respond to detected defects. Therefore, complex inspections will be minimized and the economic efficiency of the process will be significantly improved.

The project aims at the development of a modular and compact tape placement head with integrated online quality control and online compensation methods.
